SpaceX’s Starship Flight 13 lifted off Friday evening from Starbase at the southern tip of Texas, completing an approximately hourlong test that deployed 20 advanced Starlink test payloads and ended with the upper-stage spacecraft making a soft splashdown in the Indian Ocean.
The 407-foot system is the world’s most powerful launch vehicle. Friday’s flight followed a July 16 last-second abort and another delay caused by thick clouds. Engineers replaced six of the Super Heavy booster’s 33 engines after some failed to ignite during the aborted attempt.
What the flight accomplished
The spacecraft reached its planned space-skimming trajectory, opened its payload door and released 20 Starlink V3 test units. It then tested reentry systems and survived long enough to make a controlled ocean landing. The craft remained floating when the webcast ended, a visible improvement for a program that learns through repeated test flights.
The booster did not return to the launch tower. It targeted an ocean splashdown off the Texas coast, which CBS reported was harder than intended after engine issues. That distinction matters: the upper stage completed its principal sequence, while the booster test was not flawless.
Why NASA is watching
NASA selected a version of Starship as a lunar lander for future Artemis crews. Before astronauts can depend on it, SpaceX must demonstrate reliable engines, heat shielding, orbital operations, propellant transfer and repeated flights. One successful test does not prove the entire system is ready for crewed missions.
What comes next
SpaceX will analyze telemetry, inspect recovered information and determine what caused the booster’s landing problems. Future goals include more demanding reentry profiles and eventually another attempt to catch the returning booster at the launch tower.
